ACHIEVED $4M IN SAVINGS, TRANSFORMING CLOUD COSTS FOR A MAJOR NORTH AMERICAN AIRLINE

CLIENT

One of the world’s leading global carriers which operates an extensive passenger and cargo network with a strong focus on operational reliability and efficiency.

BUSINESS CHALLENGE

As part of its digital transformation journey, the airline had already migrated the majority of its IT assets from on-premises infrastructure to AWS. However, with cloud adoption scaling rapidly, AWS infrastructure costs began increasing significantly and the airline faced the following challenges:

  • Rising Cloud Costs: AWS infrastructure expenses were increasing, with 15 categories of cost optimization opportunities identified across 14,000+ occurrences.
  • ROSA Cluster Sprawl: Consolidation of Red Hat OpenShift on AWS (ROSA) clusters posed a key challenge, with 43 clusters requiring optimization and rationalization.
  • Limited Application Team Bandwidth: Application teams were constrained by competing business priorities, slowing remediation and cost optimization initiatives.
  • Fragmented Vendor Ecosystem: The client was managing 150+ domestic vendors across 10+ suppliers, creating operational complexity and governance challenges.
  • Need for Structured FinOps Governance: There was a need for a centralized, scalable model to continuously identify, prioritize, and execute high-impact savings opportunities.

To address these challenges, the airline partnered with Mphasis to drive a comprehensive Cloud Cost Transformation program, targeting sustainable savings, operational efficiency, and long-term FinOps maturity.

SOLUTION

Mphasis implemented a structured, two-phase engagement model supported by a strong governance and execution framework.

Phase 1: Rapid Remediation & Quick Wins

  • Deployed FinOps experts to assess the AWS environment.
  • Leveraged Cloudability to identify high-impact cost optimization opportunities.
  • Fast-tracked remediation across key waste areas.
  • Delivered immediate cost efficiencies through targeted interventions.

Phase 2: Strategic Optimization & Modernization

  • Identified long-term architectural savings opportunities.
  • Architected and guided migration to a next-generation, multi-tenant Red Hat OpenShift on AWS (ROSA).
  • Consolidated 43 ROSA clusters to improve utilization and reduce overhead.

Mphasis established itself as a strategic FinOps partner across all domains. We implemented a robust governance model to ensure continuous identification and execution of savings initiatives. We also launched a POD-based execution factory to augment application teams, reduce technical debt, accelerate remediation cycles, and scale cost-efficient implementations.

BENEFITS

Mphasis’ solution approach helped the client achieve both financial and operational impact including:

$4M in savings and $4.17M savings pipeline

$2.07M annualized savings delivered from ROSA migration (43 clusters)
