SAVED COST BY 40% THROUGH CEAD

CLIENT

The client is a leading, global, logistics company that wanted to augment functionalities and enhance user experience. However, it used mainframe applications that were developed 40 years ago and had no proper documentation. As a result, the client decided to move away from mainframe systems and wanted to modernize its COBOL application to state-of-the-art, Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) technology to extend business functionalities to more users and with better user experience.

CHALLENGES

Mphasis had to extract business rules from the mainframe COBOL application and document this so that the analyst, designer, developer, and tester would understand how to use it to create relevant artefacts. As a result, business analysts had to gather and provide a ‘requirements document’ for any new development. However, most developers/maintenance engineers had already retired and did not understand the application’s business functionality in entirety.

SOLUTION

Our solution focused on business rules and workflow documentation. Despite these challenges, we created and customized a document template using Mphasis CEAD – COBOL Explorer, Analyzer and Documenter.

BENEFITS

Our solution delivered the following benefits:

Ensured a uniform documentation process.

Reduced analysts’ stress by avoiding toggling between various documents and remembering the code flow to extract business functionality.

Eased ability to group and re-group business functionalities.

Saved project management time.

Saved about 30 percent to 40 percent costs when compared to documenting business functionality without CEAD.
